Our Story

History Treks was founded in 2023 by two friends, drinking together in a pub one night in Reading, Berkshire. Both friends, a programmer and an archaeologist, were tired of seeing their favourite local areas get demolished. They wanted to do business differently – to create an app centered on positivity, honesty, and with local communities at the very core of their concern. And yeah, we get it! Many companies claim to have a social conscience. What makes us different is that we actually mean it. If we didn’t like it as locals or employees, we don’t like it as a company.

The archaeologist sat down to dig through piles of town records and archaeological reports, and the programmer began to build an intuitive, attractive, and user-friendly interface with both of them working tirelessly on the tour route and what to include.

After several months of effort, History Treks’ first Trek was available, for the town of Reading – only, there was a problem. It was several hours long! As it turns out, the deeper you dig into history, the more of it you find. The tour gained more stops as a result, until there was enough for four full Reading area tours ready to go. After a bit of field testing, and speaking personally to local businesses and experts, History Treks was able to release our first tour, Old Reading, in June of 2024.

We’re aiming to release more tours as our app grows and expands, and we’re looking forward to having you join us on what will hopefully be a long-distance journey!
